Language An Introduction to the Study of Speech Edward Sapir 9781374836778 Books
I found Edward Sapir's introduction to the study of speech fascinating. It discusses a variety of issues involved in the study of spoken language, including differences in grammatical structure, history, and phonetic drift (the way sounds change) as well as many other topics. It reads sort of like a collection of class lectures, but that is okay for those interested in the study of speech. The author understood the origin of language as an evolutionist and that colored his perspective on its nature and the nature of humankind. However he seemed to recognize that modern human sciences really do not understand how language could have actually developed from natural processes. The author shows an apt understanding of almost all the world's major language groups, especially native American languages, some of which he documented first-hand before the time of their extinction or near extinction.Product details

Language An Introduction to the Study of Speech Edward Sapir 9781374836778 Books Reviews
One of the most important introductions to the essence of language.
I have read more scholarly works by Sapir..
gogd book, I'm Chinese, and read this to improve English,to realise more about English
This is an intriguing study of speech and one I endorse for any student interested in linguistic anthropology.
Don't buy this edition of the book. My copy just arrived in the mail. It lacks the detailed table of contents other editions have, and the index is useless, since it does not give page numbers! I have given it one star only because 's rules require it. There are other editions by other publishers.
Thnak you
Buy something other than the CreateSpace () paperback edition! Its format is deadly (8.5x11" pages with a single, more than 6"-wide column in 12-point type). The version is far more readable for the same (apparently scanned) text. As other reviewers have noted, but 's listing doesn't, this is a reprint of the 1921 original (now, surely, in the public domain).
